Experience
- Placement: Chief Counsel, U.S. Headquarters
- Challenge: How do you find the right chief counsel in a business environment which is rapidly changing?
- Strategy/Action: Sun Life Financial was going through a process of becoming a public company and needed a different kind of chief counsel in the U.S. They needed candidates with experience in life insurance, in house management, and securities experience in a major law firm. We presented a slate of candidates, including a couple of “best available athletes” – great lawyers who had some, but not all of the desired qualities —because our experience tells us that at the end of the day, chemistry and timing can be very important too - particularly in a time of significant change for a business. The candidate hired was perfect for the position. Even though he had no life insurance experience, he was able to successfully fulfill the business strategy, and built a great law department in the process.
- Result: "I was the candidate hired into this role. The search required hard work, patience and diplomacy, all of which are Jane Sender’s strengths. I went on to work with Jane in hiring a number of lawyers at Sun Life. With each search she approached the task with focus and a determination to find the right candidates and succeeded each time."
