Counteroffers - the Pros and Cons of Staying Put

Posted November 07, 2007

Perri Capell, who writes a Q&A career column for the Wall Street Journal, responds to a question this week about whether it is a good idea, after accepting a new job offer, to accept a counteroffer from your current employer. Citing human resources experts, he says “mostly the decision turns on whether you can be sure that the factors that made you want to leave will change…about half of employees take counters, but the majority start looking for new jobs within six months because they found that nothing really changed except the size of their paychecks.” He also notes that “some managers resent having to make counteroffers and it may damage your relationship.” The article is interesting reading and can be found at www.careerjournal.com
