According to the just published 2007 Altman Weil Law Department Compensation Benchmarking Survey, cash compensation for in-house lawyers in management nationally rose between 8% and 14% in the past year. The median salary for a chief legal officer was $300,000 in 2007, with an average $157,400 in bonus. Division general counsel earns an average of $232,000 with a median bonus of $104, 600. Law department size, however, is a major factor in compensation. In departments with more than 25 lawyers, total cash compensation for the chief legal officer is $645,000, while it is $201,500 in one lawyer departments.
